A new BC Resource Road Access Survey is gathering local knowledge about the roads and road systems people use to reach trails, lakes, rivers, cabins, campsites, riding areas, backcountry areas and other recreation destinations.

Much of BC’s backcountry is reached by resource roads. These roads were built mainly for forestry and other resource industries, but they also provide important access to trails, lakes, rivers, cabins, recreation sites, backcountry areas, rural communities and outdoor tourism destinations.

You do not need to have perfect information. Local knowledge, best estimates, photos, maps and examples are all helpful.

The survey asks about:

  • roads currently used for recreation access
  • roads that are open but potentially at risk of closure or deactivation
  • roads that are already closed, limited or difficult to access.
  • barriers such as gates, washouts, missing bridges or culverts, poor road conditions, seasonal closures and other access challenges.

This work is intended to identify important access routes, roads at risk of closure or deactivation, current barriers and possible solutions. This will help create a provincial inventory of roads and road systems that are important for recreation. The information may also support future planning, advocacy, and funding proposals aimed at maintaining or restoring recreation access.

The BC Rescource Road Access Survey is launched by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC in collaboration with the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC, BC Snowmobile Federation, Four Wheel Drive Association of BC, Quad Riders ATV Association of BC, British Columbia Mountaineering Club, and support from the Service Road Atlas.
