With temperatures of 30° C around BC, outdoor adventures are increasingly strenuous on the body. Here is a list of tips on how to stay safe & cool on your outdoor adventures:
- Listen to your body! Be attentive to signs of dehydration, e.g. nausea, headaches, irritability, dizziness.
- Adjust your plans when needed. Choose adventures with shorter distances, longer breaks, and slower tempo.
- Time it well! Before 10am or after 6pm is safest.
- Pick shady routes! Trees are your besties (tree shade will always win over artificial shade).
- Dress smart! Loose, light-coloured & UV blocking layers. And don’t forget a hat and sunscreen!
- Hydrate! Bring plenty of water and drink before you get thirsty. Electrolytes may also come in handy.
- Take a dip! Pick routes with water access. Pro tip: soak your hat and shirt, and you’ll stay cool for longer.
If in doubt, stay at home and save the adventure for a cooler day. While we know it’s hard to resist outdoor adventures, remember that your safety is always your first priority.
