About the FMCBC
The Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) is the only province-wide umbrella organization dedicated to protecting and maintaining public, non-motorized access to BC’s trails and backcountry.
Since 1972, we have represented the interests of outdoor clubs from every corner of the province and have provided a united voice on issues related to non-motorized backcountry recreation.
Our membership is comprised of a diverse group of thousands of non-motorized backcountry recreationists including hikers, rock climbers, mountaineers, mountain bikers, trail runners, kayakers, backcountry skiers and snowshoers. As an organization, we believe the enjoyment of these pursuits in an unspoiled environment is a vital component to the quality of life for British Columbians, and by acting under the policy of “talk, understand and persuade” we advocate for these interests.
Vision
Accessible and respectful recreation in British Columbia’s wilderness.

Purpose

- Advocate: We advocate to improve resourcing, collaboration and decision-making to enable public recreation in BC’s backcountry and trails. We coordinate efforts and amplify the voice of clubs to ensure the views of non-motorized recreation users are heard by the government and other key decision-makers.
- Serve: We connect non-motorized recreation users across the province to learn from one another and collaborate on access, recreation and stewardship initiatives. We provide meaningful support and resources to member clubs including insurance, a knowledge hub and other benefits to support clubs.
- Educate: We promote non-motorized public recreation and contribute knowledge on advocacy, funding, risk management and other topics to support individuals and member clubs to respectfully and safely recreate in BC’s wilderness.
- Collaborate: We seek to partner with a diversity of outdoor organizations, Indigenous people and organizations and government agencies on intersecting backcountry stewardship, recreation and inclusive access issues. We provide opportunities for volunteers to engage in stewardship initiatives including building and maintaining trails, cabins and recreation sites and areas.
