The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), announced in March 2009, that the Government of Canada will invest $25 million in Canada's trail infrastructure as part of the federal government's Economic Action Plan. In the past the FMCBC developed and sponsored an Adopt-A-Trail program, which encouraged people and organizations to clear, maintain, mark, and upgrade existing mountain or country hiking trails (e.g. the Howe Sound Crest Trail or Else Lake Trail). Several trails throughout BC were included in the program, but due to liability concerns the program is no longer running.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Council directed municipal staff to convene the Trails Planning Working Group (TPWG) to help with the planning of non-motorized hiking and mountain biking trails within and adjacent to RMOW boundaries.
