BC Trail Tracker Overview
Vision
The vision for the BC Trail Tracker is to create a website where our members and the public can get information on the status of hiking trails in BC.
- The primary reason is to collect trail condition reports and determine which trails and backcountry campgrounds need volunteer work.
- A secondary reason is to provide fabulous trail descriptions. FMCBC members should be able to write much better descriptions than the editors of AllTrails (who knows where they are located). A few of our clubs and other volunteers are already providing fantastic information about trails in their areas. We will add links to those information sources.
Government Links
Unfortunately Recreation Sites and Trails BC’s website doesn’t provide any information like we envision. Some hiking trails are shown on their interactive maps. BC Parks does sometimes update the park website with advisories when trails are closed or for other reasons. They only take email trail condition reports and the work rarely gets done in a timely manner.
Not to provide fancy maps
Our BC Trail Tracker won’t try to supply fancy GPS maps like AllTrails, GaiaGPS, FATMAP, Trailforks or so many other websites do. We are not trying to compete with them. We do provide a link from the Trail Tracker to the best map that we found. Ideally it would be nice to have descriptions with lots of photos and maps like West Kootenay Hiking, the Caledonia Ramblers and Vancouver Island Trail websites do. Search for the Lost Mountain trail to see an example.
Volunteers Needed
We need you to check if your favourite trail is in the BC Trail Tracker. If not please add the trail – there are not that many mandatory fields for you to enter. We are only just getting started in early 2022, so we have lots of work to add the 1000s of trails in BC. We also need volunteers to add trail condition reports, volunteer to work on trail days, trail champions to adopt-a-trail and organize trail work teams.
Contact us and get involved!
Please contact our trails team and we will add you to our list of trail volunteers and trail champions! You can also use the contact form if you see any issue in a trail description or trail condition report and want to have it corrected.
