Opening on the ORC Board of Directors
From FMCBC President and ORC Chair, Dave Wharton
To all FMCBC members:
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORC) is the provincial body that represents all backcountry recreation in BC, both motorized and non-motorized. Its Board of Directors is made of reps from the various recreation groups, including equestrians, mountain bikers, 4×4’ers, quad riders, hunters, fishermen, paddlers, etc. The FMCBC also has a seat on the Board and is one of the primary provincial groups on the Board representing non-motorized backcountry recreation.
I am now in my 6th and final year on the ORC Board and have chaired the Board for the past 3 years.
I would encourage all individuals who are active or wish to become active to consider filling the vacancy that will be created by my departure. You would sit on the Board, but not be assuming the Chair’s position. The initial appointment to the Board is for a one-year term, commencing this June at the ORC AGM. You would be eligible to move into the Chair’s position following the initial one-year appointment, but that would not be a requirement or expectation. This opportunity is open to any member in good standing in a club that is a member of the FMCBC. You do not have to be on your local club’s executive, but I would like your club executive to endorse you and put your name forward.
I would like the interested individual to have their name put forward in enough time that you would participate in a few Board meetings prior to my departure, in order that you can become oriented to how the Board conducts its business, and to develop some comfort with the ORC organization.
Board meetings are generally on the first Monday of the month (except when that Monday is a holiday). They are teleconferenced, or if you are in the Vancouver area you are welcome to attend the ORC office for Board meetings. Meetings start at 5 p.m. and run about 2 hours. Most Directors call in. It doesn’t matter where in BC you reside, as ORC has Directors in most regions of BC.
Other than the monthly meetings, the time commitment would not amount to more than one or 2 hours per month, unless you chose to volunteer for other committees and work.
This is a good opportunity for someone who wishes to become more involved and who would like to learn more about how the backcountry recreation community works on issues and advocates on your behalf to help ensure we all continue to enjoy the BC backcountry.
The woman or man who fills this upcoming vacancy will have the full support of the FMCBC Board, Executive, and staff.
