The FMCBC has sent a letter to BC’s Minister for Public Safety and Solicitor General John van Dongen after he was reported considering fining skiers who cross ski resort boundaries. Most media reporting on this matter did not distinguish between unprepared out-of-bounds skiers and prepared & experienced backcountry skiers who access backcountry terrain from ski resorts. The Minister’s response stated that “the Province is open to discussions with backcountry and ski area stakeholders regarding options to deter users (skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and others) from either skiing out of bounds or exposing themselves to known dangerous conditions.”
