Seven reasons why your club should join the FMCBC

Show your support

By joining the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC (FMCBC), your club and its members will become connected with a group of over 5000 people from across BC, many of whom are working hard to ensure that access to quality non-motorized backcountry recreation is protected and maintained. British Columbia’s quiet, backcountry spaces are under constant threat of development and rezoning.   We provide the voice which protects these spaces with non-motorized recreation interests in mind.   Your membership shows that your club supports our efforts and helps to increase the strength of our voice when negotiating with commercial outdoor recreation operators, resource industry companies and government agencies.

Gain our support and be heard

The province is vast and we depend on our member clubs to bring forward concerns from their regions. Our member clubs are our eyes and ears in the backcountry and alert us to potential access restrictions, changes in trail usage, and new or increasing user conflicts. Each member club holds a voting position within the FMCBC and can bring these issues forward to seek support and advice.

Connect with the larger outdoor recreation community

Through the FMCBC, member clubs have the opportunity to learn about each other and make connections. Many clubs plan trips together or visit clubs in different regions of the province. Our AGM weekend brings together directors from across BC and provides an opportunity to build relationships and friendships. The AGM takes place in a different region each spring and the host club offers hiking trips to give us all a chance to check out some of the highlights from their region.

Insurance

Unfortunately, accidents do happen and your club, volunteers, trip leaders and members should be protected. Member clubs qualify to participate in our liability insurance program which includes comprehensive Third Party Liability coverage and Directors and Officers coverage. We also provide assistance and advice regarding risk management, waivers and incident reporting.

Obtain funding for a project

Member clubs qualify to apply for project funding through our annual FMCBC Member Club Grant Program which supports club initiated projects. Get back some of your membership dues and use them towards a trail project in your region.

Get informed

Members receive our monthly E-Newsletter which includes club and committee updates and links to hot topics around the province. Members also receive our semi-annual Cloudburst newsletter which is filled with good information and articles pertaining to non-motorized backcountry recreation in BC.

Share your stories and promote your club

Clubs and their members can contribute articles and photos to our Cloudburst newsletter (it’s a great avenue for aspiring writers). Clubs can also contribute articles and announcements to our monthly E-Newsletter and can advertise for free in both publications.
